Essay tips
« on: October 10, 2019, 11:23:32 PM »
So first year head coach here. In years past our essay scores have not been great, even though many of our students are good writers. A coach once told us to simplify...treat the grader as if he/she knows nothing. Is this a good approach?

Yes, as it's no guarantee you'll get a grader that's familiar with the topic the student has chosen to address.

So, the Essay graders get a list of facts in the Resource Guides the students might use, but otherwise may know next to nothing about the subject at hand. Definitely treat the reader as if they don't know anything, but also pay a lot of attention to mechanics, transitions, and other things English teachers may enjoy!

Essay can be a crapshoot sometimes (most of the time?), but some teams have had a lot of success in getting good scores every time. Hopefully one of their coaches can pipe up.

Good grammar goes a long way. I've found that if the students don't have their mechanics down coming into the competition, I don't really have time to teach that stuff. This is one area that's very hard to coach.
